but can you wear them in a law firm?

I forget, G10, are you a lawyer or a law student or neither?

and our firm's dress code says women's shoes must be closed, but you can wear either open toe or open heel (but not both).

As for whether they're appropriate for a law firm, you wear them accordingly (i.e. with a more conservative outfit).

and there is no explicit dress code in the office, except that being in court most days requires professional attire.  I know women lawyers who wear a suit every day without fail and other women who rarely put on a suit except for a jury trial.

I never wear open-toed shoes; occasionally I wear slingbacks.  Usually a suit with pumps or a stacked loafer.

Pretty boring, huh? I like suits, though, because they are so easy to throw on, and they always match.   I've seen some younger attorneys wear jazzier stuff than I do, but I have NEVER seen a suit like that red one downthread.  WOW!  Motion granted, indeed!

Of course, all of the men wear suits every time they appear in court, which is, generally, every day.

I made the mistake of wearing a semi-casual outfit to work one day after lots of all-nighters . . . and, of course, it turned out to be the day when a clerk for a federal judge called and said there was to be an emergency motions hearing in 2 hours!  I had to run to Brooks Brothers to get something appropriate . . . blew my budget and I never really liked it.

Moral of story: Always keep a navy blue boring suit in your office for emergencies.
