We were private and then went public so I did lots of SEC reporting also. Then SOX stuff that I hated. My first love is running the GL and dealing with the auditors so that's what I hope to go back to.

Our auditor routinely puts new people on our account.  So we have to go up the learning curve with the firm again every third or so quarter.

We finally got someone competent at the end of our fiscal last year (June 2006), after almost two years of struggling with them.

I am more in a support role now, long story, but I work behind the scenes to help the Controller, and my actual job is supposed to be Secretary and Treasurer (new addition to the job duties).  My informal role is glue to keep things together.   Very loyal glue at that.

I hope you have the chance to get back to the work you like to do and that your auditor is reasonable to work with!
