  •  Respect for women by men and... (12+ / 0-)

Respect for women by women. Unfortunately, it is the sad case that it is often Mom who tells the abused wife to go back to her husband - why else the urgent need for abused women's shelters? In the middle east, it is often women who implement against other women conservative constraints (see the sociology of cliterectomies). It is women who raise the boys who become fundamentalists or abusers.

It must be demanded that men respect women, by both other men and by women. The political reality is that this must be lead by women.

I never really got the cliche that I would be loved when I started loving myself. It wasn't until I stopped abusing, belittling and hating myself that I realized why so many men showed such little respect for my feelings.

There's so much to learn from Alicia's and so many other people's stories. The physical need for safety should come before all else. But if you are always looking out for the needs of others, it can allow someone to prey on your own most basic needs. And I completely agree with you that society's norms will often reinforce the need for women to put other people first.
