    and domestic violence is frightening.  I remember a discussion on a Los Angeles radio station in which the host compared donations of 2 separate fund raisers in a city located in the northeast United States: a women's shelter and an animal shelter.  The animal shelter received 3 times as much money than the women's shelter.  The callers to the radio station (keep in mind, a large city, clear across the country) confirmed the reasoning: animals are innocent and abused women are not.  That thinking is not localized, but pervasive.

    Though the discussion was a number of years ago, I remember it oh so well, and it looks as though nothing has changed at all.

    BTW:  Ohio's family/child custody laws are appalling, too.
