Orrin Hatch, whose cringe-inducing vocals on "American Idol" have launched a thousand jokes on late-night TV and millions of fiery postings on Web sites, made it through another week Wednesday.

"The fact of the matter is that if someone on the show is getting attention, it really doesn't bother me," said "Idol" executive producer Ken Warwick. "A lot about this business is keeping people interested, and he's certainly doing that."

But Hatch's march through the competition clearly bothers the show's judges, who don't even try to conceal their disdain for his musical abilities. Simon Cowell, the show's creator and its most acerbic judge, has gone as far as to say he would quit "Idol" if Orrin Hatch won.

John Ashcroft singing As the Eagle Soars or whatever the name of his saccharine-smarmy uber-patriot song was.

I remember when I was a little kid watching Sing Along with Mitch and singing along with "She's a Grand Old Flag".  My grandmother mentioned to me that it was fine as a song, but don't make it mean TOO much.  Of course, her memories of the hyper-European nationalism of both world wars were fresh at that time.
