  •  Difference btw "talking to" and "negotiating w/"? (4+ / 0-)

Is there anything wrong with talking to members of a foreign government?

Negotiating with is one thing--implying you're representing your  government with authority-- but simply to have a dialogue? isn't that something else. If that were illegal, it would seem to rule out any private citizen having an audience with any foreign leader, if taken to an extreme. I'm sure neither Pelosi nor Carter would pretend they were speaking for the president.

In any case, I would think that Pelosi would have checked with good legal counsel before proceeding on the trip. And isn't it typical Rovian tactics to have leaked to Fox & CNN the talking point question: Is Pelosi commiting a felony? There's no intention to actually push a prosecution, which they would certainly (I'm guessing) lose, and which would look absurd if actually carried out. Merely asking the question is enough to serve Rove's purpose of casting doubt on the "enemy". And note that the "enemy" here is simply a member of the other party who is trying to

What's to stop him from sitting down over a cup of tea and saying, "Bashie old friend, I know we have an idiot currently in the White House, but how about working towards chilling out the Mid-East situation? BTW, how's the family?"

Shut it down is so yesterday. Now it's time to FIRE IT UP!
