      Also, they are easy targets.  I'm thinking the freedom fighters (a/k/a insurgents) need them to coordinate their attacks and to run away from the Americans.  It's the American army that destroy the towers.

      Establishing cellular service was one of the first big plums offered under the Provisional Authority - remember the big "Iraq is open for business" trade shows back in 2003?

      Don't recall all the details, but there were some major tradeoffs to give the contract to a particular Repub company.  So they would have had plenty of money to fortify the towers.

      Plus, having cell phone coverage works to the advantage of the insurgent groups. An efficient mobile communications system - why destroy that?
