was written by the man, Matthew Bogdanos, hired by the Coalition Provincial Authority to investigate the looting at the museum. My sense is that his heart is in the right place, but his loyalties were to the CPA and the military first, at least at that time. His reporting absolved the US Govt of all fault.

Perhaps now that he is again a civilian he can be more forthright. He does care deeply about the protection of the Iraqi's heritage, that is for certain.

to make it look less than when it came to the discussions from Rummy about "the same guy with the same vase" tape quips. But as someone familiar with what an antiquities museum looks like, I figured that it was far worse than I'd seen.

Then I heard reports of archaeologically and historically significant areas getting hit.

Again, if the fraction I saw sounded bad, I multiplied it for what I expected reality probably was.

I read some pretty outrageous crap from the right, who insisted that only a backpack full of artifacts had been taken. They also called American archaeologists who had been in Iraq during Hussein's time appeasers, as though they had something to do with Saddam's bad behavior. They are psychotic, that's all there is to it.

And yes, the looting in 03 was terrible, but the looting taking place now is completely tragic. It is worse now than ever before in the 5000 years of documented history of that nation.
