  •  Long-term care (7+ / 0-)

is another area of insurance coverage that deserves a diary of its own.  I have the coverage, but I know without any doubt that it will not be easy to collect on it when I need long-term care.

    •  Quality is the big issue with long term care (6+ / 0-)

Most nursing facilities and skilled nursing facilities employ caring people, and attempt to do good things; but the task at hand is overwhelming. The coverage you have elected to pay for will help you pay for the incidentals the long-term care insurance ignores. This saves you from having to pay for the both the care and the incidentals.

The long-term care policies often deny the little things that make life tolerable if not enjoyable. They cover room and board and medical supervision of your condition, but not a private room. Or they cover the room and board, but no tv or phone. They will provide the nurse's aid to help you wash your hair, but no shampoo and conditioner.

This is still preferable to people who have to divest themselves of all assets in order to qualify for Medicaid. Most people don't know this, but medicaid pays for over 50% of the long-term care in the U.S. It's bare bones care.

A Per Diem policy pays out the amount without having to show receipts for reimbursement. That way you have more flexibility on expendatures.
