    •  Still fear of the right wing slime machine... (5+ / 0-)

for too many in DC, when pushing hard is the winning hand with the public.

Iraq will probably explode no matter what course is taken, so why be there when it happens.

Let's be available to help when the Iraqis and others in the region are ready to move forward to a full and fair outcome, and stay out of their way until then.

I have a feeling that Iran and Saudi Arabia will help make the situation more stable if we are not there.

Yes, Iran is stronger than they would have been otherwise.  For that we can thank Bush.

for more diplomatic efforts within Iraq and with neighboring countries. Not bush style diplomacy though and that's the problem.
We need help and advice, we need to listen to people who understand the dynamics better.

Of course I want us out...but if I were in congress what's best for us would not be the only issue. We unleashed chaos and we can say it's up to the Iraqis to take care of it but most people there are just citizens. We have to try to understand what is best for them, what can be done and that is what I'd like to hear people calling out for.

Do we just decide the Iraqi police and troops can take care of the citizens? However well trained they are that could be big trouble if Michael Ware is right. He says sectarian violence is down in Baghdad. Well here is one of his quotes

What we've seen is a decline, not an eradication of, but a decline in sectarian murders. It's much harder now for the death squads to operate. That's for two reasons. One is Americans are maintaining much more of a constant presence in many of the areas where the death squads were working. Secondly, the Americans are now essentially babysitting of the many death squads or their facilitators. The Iraqi police, elements of the ministry of interior and the Iraqi army forces.

Is that who we leave them to?

Diplomacy should have started long ago but at least it should start now along with our plans to leave. I don't know what might help but that is what they need to be trying to find out, working as hard at that as they are to get our guys home sooner.

        •  I can't think of a half-dozen members of (0+ / 0-)

either house of Congress who want us to withdraw from Iraq completely - the "government" there is so corrupt it can't govern, and the military and polices forces are so infiltrated with militia members that they're useless in protecting the population.

If we do leave completely, Iran will step up arming the Shi'a, the Saudi's will become involved on the side of the Sunni's, and the Turks will invade Kurdistan.

And what American president could resist getting this country involved in an imbroglio like that?  There would be a lot of screaming for us to "do something" and a lot of insistence on "protecting our interests" in the region.
