  •  Sorry, that's just not true. (3+ / 0-)

McCloskey was never a 'mainstream' Republican.... any more than Jacob Javits was a 'mainstream' Republican.

My father was a life long Republican in NY.  The party of Jacob Javits, Nelson Rockefeller, John Chafee, Nancy Kassebaum, Lowell Weicker and other moderate Rs.  He worked for the NY Repub Party when he was young.  Growing up in a family with a father who was an R and a mother who was a D was great.  My father doesn't recognize todays Rs.  He is most disappointed in the War.  As he has said, it's always the grunts who fight and die.  He voted D in the last few Presidental elections.

who was a Massachesetts Republican.  The Republican mainstrem went in many directions and by contrast with current standards, Senate Minority Leader Everrit Dirksen would look like a leftist (it was he who voted to break a filibuster by southern Democrats against the 1964 Civil Rights bill).  It was Goldwater who brought the party to the edge of fanaticism and Nixon turned the Republicans into the locus of malignancy that they are today.

when there was a left wing of the Republican party.

But that's what it was -  it wasn't the 'mainstream' of the party.

nor Eisenhower, nor Jerry Ford, nor George Bush Senior...

There was a time when the Republican party was respectable - if far from perfect.

      •  Eisenhower, Ford, or GHW Bush? (0+ / 0-)

I don't know what you are talking about, those were mainstream Republicans, certainly not in the Rockefeller/Javits wing of the party.
