    •  i'm actually thinking (5+ / 0-)

Michael Brown was more qualified to run FEMA than Gonzales the DoJ.

And here I was opposing his nomination because he was evil.  I never figured that spending so much time as a lawyer/judge he'd be incompetent.

      I got nuthin (-6.88, -6.15)

      •  What is "senior staff"? (3+ / 0-)

i'm actually thinking . . . Michael Brown was more qualified to run FEMA than Gonzales the DoJ.

I noticed that Abu G's handlers seem to have given him an actual defense based on that.  He didn't quite mention his total lack of prosecutorial experience but a number of times he ran that talking point that he needed to, and was entitled to, rely upon the advice and judgment of "senior staff" who would be much better qualified to evaluate the performance of US Attorneys than he.

But, as one of the Democrats pointed out, this made it sound like the people he was relying upon were greybeards who had been prosecutors all their lives, when in fact "these were quite young and new and very political people".

It all depends upon what you mean by "senior staff".  It used to be that the "senior staff" of career Justice Department civil service employees made the final hiring decisions for the non-political people coming into Justice, but that has been changed in this administration and so now it is the same "senior staff" of young political appointees who make the final hiring decisions of civil service lawyers.  And of course many of them seem to match the profile of people like Sampson and Gooding.

          of pointing that out yesterday.

It sounds to me as if Goodling actually and Sampson ran the day-to-day stuff at DOJ under Rove's guidance.  I don't know what Gonzales was doing.  Maybe he was focused on the torture and wiretapping end of things.

It sounds to me as if Goodling actually and Sampson ran the day-to-day stuff at DOJ under Rove's guidance.

And some of the "guidance" from Rove probably amounts to obstruction of justice and that is why Monica is demanding (and should receive next week) the sort of limited, or "use" immunity that will force her to testify.

I don't know what Gonzales was doing. Maybe he was focused on the torture and wiretapping end of things.

Well one of the reasons he gave as to why he would have no recollection at all of the key November 27th meeting about the firings was that it was "Meth Awareness Week"

According to a White House press release of November 28th, only one day after the key meeting on US Attorney firings

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim November 30, 2006, as National Methamphetamine Awareness Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs and activities.

I assume that the Attorney General had advance notice of this decision given that on November 30 he was scheduled to "host" a George Washington University Medical Center Panel Discussion marking that day. [transcript]

So it looks like the in the big rush produced by the run-up to National Methamphetamine Awareness Day he was forced to leave the day to day personnel decisions at Justice to his senior [political] staff.

How does that work for you all?

    •  Gonzo is about as unqualified (2+ / 0-)

for his job as his best buddy George Bush is unqualified to be President.  When the neocons chose this imbecile (Bush) to be their front man, they didn't realize how stubborn he would be about hanging onto his pathetic cronies.  Unfortunately for us, they've still managed to (perhaps fatally) damage our Constitution, rob us blind, destroy our reputation around the world with their torture, murder, and mayhem.

It has a second meaning too -- you can look it up.

Which reminds me of a joke: What happens when Abu Gonzo takes Viagra?  He gets taller.
