I might have picked other candidate topics here to describe in that way.  ;-)

But both my parents were physicians, and I've done a lot of medical writing over the years, so this sort of thing--and the spread of multi-drug-resistant TB, and other threats--hits me particularly hard.

Sometimes I think we make it through each day only by pretending that such things aren't really possible.

        •  That really brings it home n/t (0+ / 0-)
        •  an issue that you need to know about... (0+ / 0-)

Apartment building ventilation systems that "share the air" between apartments.  The anti-smoking zealots (smoking is only #4 on your list) want to ban smoking in apartments over this issue.  What they're missing is the fact that the real problem here is the "share the air" ventilation systems.  In normal flu seasons these systems are probably responsible for additional cases and additional deaths.  In a pandemic they will be a real killer-diller.

So whatever else has to be done, apartment owners need to be required to provide non-shared air and individual ventilation or at least windows that can be opened.  And to the extent that they fail to do this, residents should use the proverbial duct tape and plastic sheeting to seal off all of those ventilation ducts in their own apartments.

If you can smell your neighbor's smoke or cooking or poop, you're at risk.

And anyone who lives in a place where they cannot open the windows to get fresh air should get the hell out of there ASAP because those places are nothing more than death traps with decorations.
