as consumers. They're waiting for something affordable to buy that will make everything ok, when what is really needed might be closer to a religious conviction. I don't think we will make it, I think we're headed for hell.

    •  Considering (0+ / 0-)

that the climate is so out of balance that if we stopped GHG emissions at their current level completely the temperature would still go up about another 0.7 deg on average, we are actually facing some hellish situations.  The question is how much can we mitigate it.  We clearly have not done enough yet.

I used to joke that if Bush attacked Iran at least he would solve global warming in the insuing oil crisis and pandemonium, but people seem to be keeping him at bay for now.

Ah, yes, another fly in the ointment.

If we figure out the GHG releases and reduce or avoid them, we will probably have to take GHGs out of the atmosphere as well.  Carbon sequestration is going to become a big business.

We've got our work cut out for us.

        •  The biggest potential for that (0+ / 0-)

and not currently feasible, possibly impossible, is shifting the pH of the ocean with megatons of base.  We don't have a good way of doing it, but to put it back where it used to be would enhance the CO2 removal.  Unfortunately peeing in the ocean won't be enough.

Oh, I don't know, we have some pretty big pissers (as well as dicks) in the human race.
