That part of the world doesn't care for "conventional warfare" last i looked. Yeah, they let fly the tanks every once in a while but there are much simpler ways to fuck over your neighbour in that region. It's been going on for decades (and decades before that).

The only "hands full" these guys have is keeping track of all the finger-puppets each has on the go at any one time. These bad boys understand chess, and they're comfortable playing more than one board at the same time.

No, Syria and Saudi Arabia (to name but two) can cause a lot of grief for Turkey without open conflict.

against the Iraqi Shiites and the Iranians.

The Saudis and Israelis have been cooperating some lately because Hezbollah and Iran are common enemies.

American occupation of Iraq has turned Saudi Arabia against us. We are now the unstated common enemy of all the people in the region, except Israel, and we even screwed them in Lebanon. The only elected world leader more unpopular then Bush now is Bush's dupe Olmert.

Even our "friends" are against us concerning Iraq. Stealing Iraqi oil and creating regional instability makes us the universal enemy.

Moreover, the Iraqi Sunnis have good reason to fear that the Iraqi Oil Law would rip them off more than anyone. The desert "exploration blocks" which would be controlled by American big oil are in Sunni held territory. The fields in this area may be the geological extension of the giant fields in Saudi Arabia. We are trying to steal the "mother lode" of Sunni oil.
