  •  Subways would be nice (7+ / 0-)

Hopefully the O'Malley admin will follow through on the Purple Line, and hopefully even pursue adding a 2nd (or maybe even 3rd) subway line in Baltimore. Maryland has some of the most ridiculous traffic problems known to man. There is one major highway going through Annapolis (US 50) and there are always some 4-mile traffic backups now. Peak oil is very real. China's economy is growing by about 11% now (that's extremely fast!!) I'm concerned about $4 gas; a lot of Maryland is NOT a pedestrian friendly place either.

    •  Modest steps on light rail would be nice (3+ / 0-)

Let the Baltimore light rail have right of way, stopping traffic downtown like it now works in suburbs.  Police can override before and after baseball and football games.  And expanded parking for the light rail - Schaefer built the lots stupidly small.

For now, like, this week, the state can at least regulate the street lights to get the light rail trains through downtown faster.  Ehrich's transit chief Flanigan (I think that was his name) promised to do this and did so, but now the lights are out of sync again.

But traffic in DC area is a thousand times worse than in Baltimore.  In Baltimore traffic frees up about 6 p.m. but in the DC area, especially in Virginia, it's just getting started.  The backups on the DC beltway are now the norm and hardly even make it to the radio traffic reports.  I had a horrible experience on the Virginia beltway a few weeks back and thought I would never get home to Baltimore.

Anyway, I have a hybrid and take public transit to work in DC and in Baltimore.  I fill up once every two or three weeks.

Trying to get from Vienna, VA to Charlottesvile on a Friday afternoon. Horrible. You have my sympathies.

The only thing Republicans do well is take our tax dollars and transfer them to the rich, instead of providing the services we thought we were paying for.
