    Americans don't like the idea of having to compete to maintain their massively privileged position.

    To some degree, that's true.  I've seen Indian poverty, and I will do just about anything to keep that level of abject desperation off our shores.

    I don't think it's unfair to ask for equivalent standards as a prerequisite to opening markets.  American workers should not have to choose to breath in carcinogenic particulates just because the Mexican government doesn't want to regulate its auto exhaust.  American workers shouldn't have to give up their union rights just because China governs its state-run union with an iron fist.  American programmers shouldn't see their wages fall just because employers have a captive pool of H-1B temporary workers with diminished legal rights.  I don't think any of that is unreasonable.  If we're going to improve our position in the USA, we're going to have to make it harder for corporations to skip town.
