papers this semester. I taught a college honors seminar on the archaeology of Ireland (my own research area). I worked with all the students (only 16) to develop and research a project or problem related to Irish archaeology. they all presented their research in class (using powerpints, posters, etc.), and then they had to write up the final project. The papers were splendid. The topics ranged from ogham to early Irish medicine to the development of boat building.

    •  I know boat building. (3+ / 0-)

My cultural anthro teacher was an expert on Danish boat building. :-)

Proving once again that everything we learn will be relevant one day.

Of course, I was grading them (finally) on the plane back from Toronto -- had too much fun in T.O. to think about the grading I should have been doing.  I had them on all sorts of interesting research topics -- the most enjoyable of all was looking at how the arts had responded to Nasser's reign -- looking at music, film, and literature.  I nominated that (and one other that was also history and literature) for the best paper in the junior seminar from the semester (a university-wide honor).  There were some that weren't that great, however...

...could at least learn how to fake interest in my class.  I shall unfortunately be disappointing some students who have the mistaken impression that they did enough for the semester.

political politeness and ways to ask questions in class.  Maybe I should do a diary about that...  I figure no one has ever told them any of these things.  And maybe someone should.
