    classes in history, which is what I teach -- and even in lower-level classes, my department maintains our stated focus on essays (short-answer to full blue-book length).  History at the college level is about issues, causation, etc., not just about names and dates.

    So a lot of children are being left behind on the skills they will need to succeed in college, all for the sake of their schools passing the requirements of tests not related to what students will need. . . .

      ...in the present environment is teaching them how to be students, how to take education seriously.  Then we can move on to how to be a college student, even a successful college student.

      Teacher's Lounge opens every Saturday between 11 am and noon. It's not just for teachers.
