    was the day I overturned the comp system in my department.
    I read the criticism, not the works (which I'd read already anyway), and there was one book that had disappeared from both libraries that held it in their collection.
    About two weeks after the comps (yes, anal-retentive has a hyphen), one showed up, and lo and behold, there was the key comp question, the exact question, underlined.
    Filed a protest, with documentation, and for some reason enough profs were outraged that the comp system was changed.
    Of course, the results for that year were not overturned: everybody had the same degree of ignorance, since no one had seen the book but the sleazy, cheating prof who plagiarized  it, etc., etc.
    Still, it was a sweet victory.  
    In the '60s you could do things like that....
