  •  The party started dying long ago. (6+ / 0-)

It started dying when they sold their soul to the relgious right, which was during Nixon's reign as the southern strategy (one of the strikes, IMHO, against Mr. Falwell).  Reagan was poison for them, for his adminsitration was the blueprint for the following two Repub admins.  Cheney, Rumsfeld and their gang put a vice around the party's neck and have been choking it for many years.  They're now stuck with Bush/Reagan wannabes, except for Ron Paul.  Say what you will about him, he's a true straight shooter and a true maverick, and probably closest to what would pass for a Goldwater conservative these days.

Good luck with your plan, I'd suggest posting to some of the Repub sites that are more sane than what we're used to (if there are such things).

to such Republicans is the fact that they are heavily brainwashed by FoxNews And Right-wing radio, which has already annointed their favorite war-candidates/soon-to-be-mass-murderers for the election, while at the same time having deeclared Ron Paul the "anti-christ".

I know for a fact that my only aid in such a matter would be liberals with a common interest in truly fracturing the modern republican party.

There may be one more fight left in them.  Buchanan might be able to get his followers behind Paul, though I'm not sure. seems to be doing their best along that line.  If they can break the eveangellical right's stranglehold, then there might be hope for the more traditional wing of the Repubs, and we might see them get away from the maniacs they have rallied around now.

joyful I would be if such a thing were to happen. Of course the so-called christians supporting the torture of humans may already be all the way down that slippery slope, with too much of a risk of personal shame should they attempt to turn around. Such an uprising would have to be a religious one, but the evangelicals supporting the destruction of muslims are no doubt a lost cause.

another scandal like Foley and the related coverup is very likely to drive away a slice of the base. They were upset over it last Fall, maybe as much as a quarter of the commenters on some of the conservative sites were unhappy about it as an abuse of power and position, although an anti-gay bias figured in as well.

And there's definite unhappyness at the last several months' revelations. Conservatives that were happy to see Bush in are feeling uneasy about the AG and politicizing of law enforcement. Get more exposure of the no-bid contracts and similar that have occurred under Bush and another busload will defect.

Too bad so many at dkos seem to buy into Bush's "either you're with us or against us" slogan, and treat everyone who doesn't 100% buy into whatever their progressive goals are as enemies.
