Whenever people start talking about how badly the government would screw up national healthcare I always ask them which is better:

A corporation that only answers to shareholders (if it's even publicly held), or a government that can be accountable to the people if they shout loud enough for long enough?

This argument works better on some people than others. I've given up trying to convince my doctor father-in-law, for example, even though he'd probably still be able to continue in single private practice as an OB/GYN if we had national health care in this country. He's having to retire a few years before he'd planned because insurance companies reimburse him when they feel like it. As a doctor in single practice, he's last to get paid. And since he's the kind of person who will go without a paycheck before he'd let his staff go without, my mother-in-law--who works at a church--made more money than he did last year.

I'm still waiting for him to appreciate the irony next time he rails against "socialized" medicine, but it hasn't happened yet.
