    coming out of the mouth of any conservative without thinking of that quote. I read the book more than a decade ago, and it still sticks in my head. Funny you hear almost the exact thing coming from the mouths of hardline Islamic fundamentalists, like the Taliban, who are trying to create much the same kind of 'freedom' -- freedom from any non-Islamic ideas.

      around 1990-1991, during the first Bush Administration.  At that time I felt a deep sense of despair about our economy, our media, and our nation's bloodthirsty rush to war.

      I did not know then to what extent my despair could deepen until the past 6 years.
