    I said:

The methods by which feminine and masculine interests are expressed for the good of a community together form a balanced response that sustains that community (--note that I did not say women and men).

I bring that up again because I really hate stereotypes about men and women.  I argue with my mother about that all the time -- she has a strong tendency to blame her luck with love in terms of a "Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars" approach.

I think that there are times however where the stereotypical notion that only women are nuturing and that only men are protectors to have real implications for how men with power but who lack principles actually treat women.

And I like your use of "authoritarian" vs "communitarian" -- I think it is the outward projection of Lakoff's analysis.  And I think, at least in the essay to which I linked earlier, that he is simply trying to analyze, as an academic would , why this might be.  I studied as a graduate student at UC Berkeley, where he teaches, and remember him well.

As for your upbringing, isn't ironic that in my situation I had absent fathers.  Was raised by my mother, aunt and grandmother to a large extent with my grandfather being the only real paternal force in my life.  I smiled when I read what you wrote as I can see how we might be coming at this issue from the places that we do.

This is a great dialogue, by the way.  Thanks.
