  •  I believe what the diarist is saying (5+ / 0-)

and he can correct me if I am wrong is this.

    1.  There is no "IRAQ" in the hearts and minds of the people who are fighting.
    1.  Ergo...  There is no "helping the Iraqi people"
    1.  Ergo...  There is no "establishing a democracy"
    1.  Ergo...  There is no government to establish.

    This is NOT our fight.

    Time to get out.

    •  I got that, too. (0+ / 0-)

The entire thing looks like a futile effort in nation-building.  But that's merely cover for the resource extraction that was and has always been the real motivation for this war.

A year ago I was bitterly opposed to partition.  I still think that's a tragedy, but I also see that there is no force on the face of the planet that can stop it.  It's already happening, and the only smart thing is to get the hell out of the way.

I've read stories about the undertow created by a sinking ship.  If it's on its way to the bottom, the smartest thing you can do, once overboard, is to swim or paddle as far away from it as possible before you are sucked down too.  That's the situation now.  The whole thing is going under, has been for a long time now, and the only way to save our troops is to get them out of the danger zone.
