    I don't think he was suggesting we're all sitting around wearing our shlyupas drinking vodka in the tundra.

    The point he made is quite good - we have succumbed to a state of totalitarianism that is as pervasive as the USSR, but far more sublime and clever. What Eddie Bernays called the engineering of concent.

    Instead of overthrowing the government with tanks, it has been overthrown with money and control of the media.

    The vested interests simply discovered a new way to control the masses: television and the selling of desire. And under the opiate influence of television, we have allowed our basic freedoms to diminish.

    I really recommend the documentary The Century of Self. You can watch it on Google video. It chronicles the implmentation of mass control through other means. It was aired on the BBC.
