  •  chemsmith, Edwards only just came out (0+ / 0-)

for civil unions in December 2006. Edwards was the only major Democratic candidate in 2004 who refused to support civil unions.

As for the draconian Constitutional initiatives which banned civil unions as well as gay marriage in 11 states in 2004, Edwards said then it was a matter left for the states to decide.... As a result of the measure in Michigan (for example), same-sex partners of state employees have lost health benefits. Where was Edwards on that?

Edwards did not cast a vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2004, which would have enshrined a constiutional ban on gay marriage and civil unions. He was one of only two Senators (Kerry was the other) who did not vote on the FMA.

He is the only Democratic presidential candidate who has posted a list of gay supporters, and I think there's a reason for that.... Because of his track record on gay rights, his support from the LGBT community is tepid (at best).

I know my comments on this subject anger Edwards supporters—so my apologies to them. Frankly, I'm only telling you what politically-informed gays and lesbians already feel about Edwards, an impression largely formed about him in 2004 (when he was still a war hawk and a culture hawk). It's an impression which is difficult, quite frankly, for many gay people like me to shake.

Believe me, I've wanted to believe in Edwards. But when he employed, in the debate, the rhetorical notion that "churches" could be "forced" to marry gays, I couldn't help but cringe... There has never been such a threat, and John Edwards, the lawyer, damn well knows it. Why does he think it's fair to scapegoat us like that?

Especially about the bogus claim that churches would be forced to marry gays.  What a lie.

If you don't have an earth-shaking idea, get one, you'll love building a better world.
