  •  Colin Powell was the only member (9+ / 0-)

of the Bush administration with the public standing who could have spoken out against the Iraq war prior to the invasion and had an impact. People can argue that Bush and Cheney were hellbent for war and Powell couldn't have stopped them, but we'll never know because Powell didn't try.

He knew war first-hand. He was on public record advocating the 'Powell doctrine,' he resisted sending American troops abroad when he was JCS Chairman under Clinton on 'Powell doctrine' grounds (in both Haiti and Bosnia). He knew he was presenting the world manipulated facts about Iraqi WMD at the UN and chose to do so anyway.

This man flushed away whatever moral standing he had with the American people and the servicemen and women of the U.S. armed forces by his actions then and subsequently. He does not deserve our trust and the fact that Obama is tapping him for advice diminishes Obama greatly in my eyes.

If Obama is looking for foreign policy advice from someone so lacking in moral character and so willing to turn his back on his publicly stated principles in the service of George W. Bush, then Obama is not the person I want bearing the standard of the Democratic party or leading the nation.

        Powell is history. Yesterday's man.

My novel is full of sex, drink, incest, suicides, dope, horseracing, murder, scandalous legal procedure and ends with a good public hanging--attended by 30,000

    •  Great synopsis of Powell, (0+ / 0-)

As a veteran, in my time, the 'Powell Doctrine' was a hard learned principal that Powell has seen proved in both it's positive and negative application.

If there is something that Obama thinks he can get from a personal meeting with Powell ... then so be it.  But if there is even the hint of them going steady ... I'm outta here!
