    That violence and murder were used to maintain slavery was common knowledge in the North by 1857.  The Fugitive Slave Law brought violence and persecution to the homes of Northerners who obeyed their conscience and their state's constitution.  Bleeding Kansas was set off by Missouri ruffians stuffing the ballot box and drawing first blood when the disagreement on slavery got violent.  It was therefore easier for some (not all!) anti-slavery Northerners to support Brown's raid since it was a response to existing, widely-perceived violence.

    Also, remember that Gandhi, the suffragettes, King and Alinsky were not born;  we have more tools of nonviolent resistance than they did.
