for a long time it was thought to be immoral to give women anesthesia during childbirth because of the Biblical teaching that woman was supposed to give birth in pain.

And then, of course, there are women who choose that anyhow.

Furthermore, it's not limited to Christians - remember the flap over the Katie Holmes supposedly forced Scientology type silent birth?

It really comes down to control and punishment.

As a supporter of alternative approaches to childbirth care, I've seen some strange combinations of people working together.  When you start discussing unmedicated childbirth, you'll find a fascinating array of hippies, radical feminists, Christian evangelicals, and Anabaptists (Amish and Mennonites).

Just my quick two cents--  some of the women who choose unmedicated births are trying to avoid the "control and punishment" involved in the medical model of obstetrics.

if the women really want that.  But if they're going to "suffer" because their minister told them that anything alleviating that suffering is a sin, that's quite another thing.

Me?  Give me every drug you've got, and then some.  And keep doing so till I'm fully healed.

Politics is like driving. To go backward, put it in R. To go forward, put it in D.
