90% of America is in the bottom two quartiles of income...

I'm thinking about doing a new unit in my high school math class:

"The mathematics of why our current government sucks"

The objectives:

The student will be able to explain why a heavily skewed income distribution makes "per-capita income" a misleading measure of personal wealth.

The student will be able to estimate the likelihood that sampling error was the sole cause of discrepancies between exit poll results and actual vote counts in the 2004 presidential election.

The student will be able to calculate the rate of increase of insurgents in Iraq given that each Iraqi we kill motivates three more people to become insurgents.

The student will be able to estimate the number of felonies committed by George W Bush during the last six years. (Scientific notation will be necessary in order to work with numbers this large.)

The student will be able to calculate the ratio between the pay of a corporal in the US Army, and a recently hired Blackwater USA mercenary.(This objective is meant to help the student become more comfortable with ratios that are very close to zero.)

The student will be able to estimate the number of actual footballs which could be purchased using a brick of \$100 bills which was literally used as a football by contractors in Iraq.

.....

Wow, instead of a unit, I might have to make a whole course....

congratulations on your foreskin -- osteriser

teacher in high school too!

(that is why I don't use my real name ;)

wouldn't curriculum like that get us fired for teaching kids analysis which is relevant?

this is just my 2nd year -

I'd like to ... I'm going to figure out a way to show kids how

for every buck an hour they do NOT make,
given their annual budget and take home pay,
how much longer to they ahve to work before they can save enough to quit working ...

of course, since 80% of them haven't ...

nevermind for now - I have finals today and tomorrow and have toooooooooooooooooooo much to do.

thanks for the chuckles
