Our COBRA was $1300/mo, but it was less, in the end, than the surgery I needed, so we spent every penny we had, and many we didn't have, to pay for it. After it ran out, we were insurance-free for many months.

I can't tell you the panic of being a parent, watching your child doing some normal kid thing (like falling off their bike), when you know you can't afford to go to the doctor. There's the instant worry about your kid's well-being at that moment, coupled with the dread of "what do we do if he's really hurt?" That nagging worry that you may need to become homeless just to help your kid is always there.

Beware the everyday brutality of the averted gaze.

Got rid of my bike and encouraged me to read all the time when I was a child. She was deathly afraid I would hurt myself, and would get really freaked out when I did.

      Turned me into a bookworm.
