    Sicko isn't really competing with the likes of Ratatouille or Live Free or Die Hard. What really counts is the per-screen average: it's a given that a limited release film isn't going to turn in the raw figures of a major release film. I'd be surprised if the industry even gives the total box office much attention when all is said and done.

    If the per-screen average is good (and it seems to be shaping up that way), that's all that matters. If the distributor can show off good per-screen numbers, they have a much improved chance of convincing the major chain theaters to pick up the film next weekend.

    Major wide release movies usually don't have that leeway: the big theaters are usually all lined up for opening weekend, and the movie has nowhere to go but down. It's an entirely different ballgame when you're dealing with independent films or documentaries, though.
