  •  In 1998 Repubs lost 3 seats (8+ / 0-)

in the House of Representatives, and zero seats in the Senate. Such was the backlash against the totally phony, partisan Clinton impeachment.

In spite of this, many Democrats (and Kossacks) are terrified that if a justified impeachment of Bush/Cheney happens, there will be a "backlash" that will cost dems congress and the White House in 2008. I don't understand where this "backlash" is supposed to come from. From those who prefer Democrats without a spine? Or from Independents who are loyal Bushies? Such voters don't exist!

    •  Well, a 3-seat House loss and a (2+ / 0-)

net hold in the Senate for the opposing party is pretty bad for a 6th-year election.

      •  Not good, certainly (1+ / 0-)

but not the "disaster" some anti-Bush/Cheney-impeachment folks today are scared of. I also think that most people are smart enough to realize that while the Clinton impeachment was nothing but a partisan witch hunt, the charges against Bush/Cheney are much more serious (even though right-wing media will call it a partisan witch hunt anyway; most will see thru that).

The backlash against Bush/Cheney impeachers, if measurable at all, will be tiny. OTOH, I predict a big turnout from Democrats who are now too disappointed/disgusted to get out and vote on Election Day 2008.
