  •  I doubt that. He had no chance (0+ / 0-)

against the neo-cona. The Cheney/Rove swift-boat machinery would have overthrown and drowned him immediately.

    •  Powell commands a certain respect in the media. (5+ / 0-)

It's not every day that a Secretary of State and former 4 star general resigns in protest.

It might have been the spark necessary to shock the media out of its complacent cheerleading.

      Who knows?

In any case, it's irrelevant--Powell was all too willing to play cheerleader himself.

650,000+ dead and 4 million displaced Iraqis; 3606 dead and 25,830+ wounded American troops; $441.5+ billion wasted -- OUT NOW!

      •  you bet (5+ / 0-)

so many of our pundits said "Powell's airtight presentation sealed it for me - we've got to invade."

a better performance by this man would have done wonders. oh well - another lost chance by another small person.

      •  That's probable, (0+ / 0-)

but I doubt that even if he would have resigned it had change the course of events. The media wouldn't have changed for long, but helped in swift-boating his resistance.

When he gave the speech at the UN the only thing I remember thinking of why the hell did he accept doing that. I thought til now there must have been something behind it that is less banal than just coward sycophancy and so-called loyalty. May be he just isn't that great in science and really believed the "facts"-part of it. Hard to believe though.
