that makes it acceptable to smear him for paying a woman for sex?

No, I don't think so. The act for which David Vitter is being accused of hypocrisy (correctly) is no more right or wrong than the actions of any other john. Hypocrisy is a counterproductive charge, because the two ways to avoid it are (1) to not be a judgmental asshole, or (2) to be a judgmental asshole who actually lives by his principles.

I'll give you three guesses which outcome is more likely, especially given that this mob behavior is not exactly (and this is the point Tucker made) helping to promote (1). Screaming HYPOCRISY!!! will only make the puritans even more dogmatic, zealous, and reactionary.

We couldn't care LESS about the sex. So what? The guy paid a hooker. People do it all the time big whoop. Personally I don't think prostitution should be a crime.

What makes this a story is Vitter proclaims himself to be this paragon of virtue even going so far as to trot out his wife to say she'd do a Lorena Bobbitt on him unlike the apparently more forgiving Hillary Clinton (turns out she's more like Hillary than Lorena after all). Vitter is a politician who ran a campaign on a foundation of "family values" and "moral principles" excoriating gays as being a threat to marriage, etc. What makes this a story is the man talked the talk but was found not walking the walk and in a very big way.

For people who not only talk the talk and walk the walk while supporting these hypocrites, it's a huge wakeup call. It is an especially rude awakening when they look to their Bibles and see how much Jesus hated hypocrites. Any anti-gay rights, "family values" fundamentalist Christian who still supports Vitter is every bit the hypocrite he is. That's why it's a big deal.

It's the truth. And frankly, I'm a little sick of hypocrites running the government. It's one of the biggest reasons why no one trusts the government. When one is exposed, no matter what party s/he is from, s/he should be run out of government.

if you didn't do it, or if the smear misstates your behavior. Say what you will, if Vitter had been found to be selling or buying pot, it might have won him advocates, it still would have been illegal, just as consorting with a prostitute is. To point out that he consorted with a prostitute is not a smear, no matter how uncomfortable the subject matter. It is a plain statement of fact. He deserves to have his blatant, naked hypocrisy exposed. That does not constitute a smear.
