    My mom has never spent much time "employed," she ran a small business out of her home that enabled her to just scrape by for years. Her husband works in the Texas oil fields on a contract basis (decent money, no insurance).

    Both of them have been scraping by, hoping to make it to Medicare. They lost that race last year, my mom got a kidney stone, went to the hospital - cost them something like $18,000 (after they negotiated down their initial $40,000 bill).

    So now they don't answer their phone because the caller is most likely a credit agency.
