  •  I love that quote about poverty. (7+ / 0-)

I'm guessing the reason why our Reps don't explain why they care about poverty is because most of them are clueless what poverty means.

And that goes for Dems too.

After all, most of the Senators are millionaires, including, again, the Dems...

    •  Much Simpler. There Isn't Anything to Be Done (14+ / 0-)

about it without seriously annoying big campaign money.

That's why Dems must run away from the base, because the Dem base is anti authoritarian and pro democratic economy.

Repubs run toward their base because their base agrees with big campaign money, they all support authoritarian society and aristocratic economy. The Repub base is to some fraction deluded in thinking they can join the winners, while the rest are not deluded, they're about to leave on the Rapture.

"Bleeding Heart" does not imply true empathy to the poor. It implies sham empathy, and paternalism.

And there was a lot of paternalism in the welfare aspects of the nineteenth and early twentieth century.  That was why Reagan became a Republican -- rejection of the idea that your betters know better for you. What is ironic is that by absorbing the evangelicals, the right wing has absorbed the paternalism that poisoned the public's view of Democratic policies.

In any case, this is what is behind the absurdity with Edwards' hair cut.  The implication is that when a privileged person wants to do a good deed, it comes with a heavy price.
