I've begun reading it with an eye toward the writer's purpose.  Some of it is a historical narrative of a people.  Some are letters to friends.  Collections of songs, advice books.  Cautionary tales, and some words to live by.  The key parts (IMO) seem to be repeated: Love God, have mercy, do justice, don't fear, take care of those less fortunate.  I may have left some out, but those stand out for me.  The dietary stuff makes sense with the sanitation they had at the time, maybe not so much today.  But the parts about having active compassion for others seem just as valid today.  And very needed.
