...I've worked at Planned Parenthood as a patient advocate, I've not experienced a procedure with an obviously anti-choice patient.

The closest I came was with a young woman who was quite stoic throughout the procedure but in the relief of having it over she got quite chatty. She said she was from a staunchly Republican family who generally would not approve of anyone getting an abortion.

I worried that she might be alone afterwards and asked if there would be anyone at home to support her if there should be complications. She said her parents knew and were supportive of her decision despite their pro-life views. She was a classic case of "it's OK if it's my daughter" syndrome.

She was surprised with her own attitude toward abortion. She had always thought she was anti-choice until she found herself pregnant, unmarried and poor. In the end, the decision was easier than she thought it would be.

It might have been inappropriate under the circumstances but I did comment to her that it was a good thing that every woman had the right to make the decision she did. She didn't disagree.

The only life that matters to a conservative is that which can't talk back.
