  •  I don't think one has to be French to understand (6+ / 0-)

    Good comment, PatsBard.

But as an American I love the sport of bicycle racing, as well. I care a great deal that it survive these problems. But it is a very black time, indeed. :( I do not know any answers.

    •  Well, my first thought was "Why don't they cancel (4+ / 0-)

      it this year?"

But I'll be the first to admit that I know next to nothing about the sport or the Tour.

Haven't these issues been recurring in the last few years, though? And if the penalties and surprise tests aren't even to keep it under control will more extreme measures have to be taken - perhaps banning teams/countries for a certain number of years like the NCAA does for serious infractions?

      •  Cheating has been part of the Tour since it ... (3+ / 0-)

... was founded.  What's new (and somewhat un-European) is the attempt to either appear to abjure cheating (former champions shrugged and said, in essence, "You got to be kidding me."), or the attempt to, in fact, keep cheaters from prospering.

      •  So far, only riders are suffering sanctions (5+ / 0-)

But in the career of a cyclist those sanctions are more severe than for any other sport. A positive test means a two year suspension, following immediate dismissal from one's team (and income source). The rider cannot ride for a Pro Tour team for a further two years, which means the rider is unlikely to get a start in any of the Grand Tours (Italy, France and Spain). That is four years out of the biggest and most important races in the world.

So, really, it's not so much that there's more problems with doping (in various manners), it's that the organizers have put their feet down and are now calling racers on it, so it's suddenly being reported on... Yes?

I think I've got it now.

Here's hoping they can weather the storm and bring the respect back to the Tour that it deserves.

being interviewed. Shocked, he said maybe they should all go home. And it could come to that. But, at least following the Vinokourov bombshell, they were resolved to continue.

Next year may indeed be at risk. We could see a reduced Tour with 13 teams and scarcely 100 riders. Only time will tell.
