This is a state that, after all, did vote for Reagan twice. Pataki was governor here for twelve years. Except for a brief period in the mid-1960s, the NY State Senate has been in GOP hands for a century.  Too many people to think NY is this Democratic stronghold because of NYC, but there are plenty of Republican parts of the state. Would Hillary have won if if she running against Rudy rather than Little Ricky? Debatable.

    •  Sen. Clinton has worked very hard on Upstate NY (3+ / 0-)

She seems to have gained respect for it.  Personally, I'd like to see here as a powerful senator for the next 25 or so years.

and go back and take a look at Rudy's numbers on Sept. 10, 2001. They might have been even lower than Chimpy's are now. He was being term-limited out of  office in six weeks, and we could not wait to be rid of him.

Then he acted the part of a competent executive for a week while trying to mitigate the many aspects of the attack that were caused by his own lack of foresight and concern, and as soon as New Yorkers started breathing again (like, a week after the attack) suggested that perhaps we should cancel the mayoral elections and hire him back for the duration. Yeah right.

This is more about Rudy/Hillary than about Dem/Repug, but NY is also significantly bluer, including upstate, than it was 6 years ago.

Sue Kelly just lost what had been a congenitally GOP district for decades to a the former lead singer of Orleans! Westchester County used to be a GOP stronghold. Now its Democratic. The red tide is being purged from New York.

    •  It is very Democratic as a whole (0+ / 0-)

Yes, RINO's can win. Reagan's win was eons ago politically. Reagan also won in Mass, RI, HI, and well, everywhere but MN. This state is trending stronlgy Democratic. The Dems now hold all the statewide offices, and are even hacking away at the GOP senate majority, which they've held for decades. NY voted for Dukakis in the 88 debacle. It's hard to imagine it going GOP next year, even if its Rudy for the GOP.

    •  It's not just about "Democratic". (1+ / 0-)

It's about Rudy vs. Hillary specifically.

And I still stand by what I said; Hillary beats Rudy in New York State by 10 points minimum.
