No doubt American's are sick and tired of dishonest, uncaring, corrupt, laissez-faire Conservatives GOPers who don't give a hoot about anything except enriching themselves and their wealthy pals while using Christian religious zealouts to carry water for them.  But the headline "The Mainstream Is Now 'The Left'" is miselading and is NOT supported by the quoted excerpts that follow.  A more apt headline would have been "Conservatives Out of Step with Mainstream." Those two headlines suggest radically different ideas.

Irrelevant comparsions to Europe aside, the notion that prevailing left wing orthodoxy, e.g., fully socialized medicine, open borders and immigration policies, affirmative action, gay marriage, etc, are now mainstream ideas endorsed by a majority of Americans is simply inaccurate.

There are those, like me, who despise Bush and Cheney and know the country deserves much better, but who are incredibly skeptical of the merits of the leftist utopia envisioned by those who idetify themselves as progressive.  The solution is in the middle which Conservatives want nothing to do with, and sadly, many on here seem to hold that same view.

the only reason you think the headline is misleading is because you have an archaic notion of what 'left' is. "Leftist utopia envisioned by those who idetify themselves as progressive"? Got a link to it? I write here all the time and I've not seen it.

There is no left othodoxy. By your standards, most on this site are perfectly comfortable with moderate points of view on health care and other domestic issues (everyone hasd a different opinion of what's best but there's a consensus on what's politically acceptable), which just goes to show how useless labels are, especially the way you use them, which is quite different than how the media uses them.
