First.  protectedmode, I'd like to thank you for all of the insight you've provided through your numerous, excellent, well-informed comments attached to this diary.

Here's the part that doesn't gel for me:

From what I gather, from the above speculation, is that Cummins selected Sandra either to protect himself from the WH, or she protected him of her own volition.

Why wouldn't Cummins have hired her because she was a local Republican loyalist who also happened to be a capable, experienced, prosecutor.  Do you think that he felt that he needed protection from the White House at the time that he hired her?  Keep in mind that he hired her back in the Spring of 2002.

I think Cummins hired her because she was a 30-year veteran of that office and a GOP supporter to boot.  That could only make him look good.

As Gonzo and all of these political appointees keep saying, the stars are really the career men and women who work in the Agencies day in and day out.  The Bushies use it as a throwaway line, to suggest that the career men and women are the ones to blame since they supposedly have the most to lose.

But behind that, it really is true.  If Bud wanted to be a success in that office, why not hire someone like Sandra who knows it backwards and forwards, someone who received commendations from previous Attorneys General.  And someone you could talk politics with.

I guess he just didn't expect to get burned.

initially, but it could be that it evolved. As the daughter’s status improved, the mother’s role became protector of Bud. Or maybe the mom knew what was up, we’ll likely never know which. But the timing of Bud’s demise with her passing makes it possible that she helped keep the wolves from Bud’s door. .

By the way, nothing pejorative intended by use of the word speculation. I used it to make it clear that it was my take on how the dots connect.

It is shocking that she would get that job at NASA given her experience and background, but NASA is a laughingstock right now, with the drunk astronauts, sabotaged computers.  She'll really have little liaison to do, other than giving political briefings.  The place is a PR shambles and no spin from a 24 year old is going to change that.
