    In politics, I don't think there is such a thing as a long-term goal. It would certainly be nice to have a permanent government that could consistently churn out good policies - but reality is such a permanent government would always mutate into something evil. So we need a change every couple of years. On top of that, the last six years have shown that the much-maligned gridlock between Congress and President is a good thing - exactly because it will interfere with either side's long-term goals.

    Thus, I believe that voting cannot be about long-term goals, but only about short term strategies.

    The only way we can accomplish long-term goals is outside the electoral process, from the grass roots or by some unelected body. That's what powered the New Deal, the Republican revolution, and that's also what will get us universal health care.
