or trade. Fill in the forms, provide the evidence of your claims, get your medical clearance, pay the application fees and levies and then beautiful blue residency stickers in your passport.
It's not a huge difficult thing if you take it step by step.
And hey, you don't have to be a citizen to vote here, just a resident of one year.

Did you find teh job before going, or after you got there?  If before, where did you look?

Sorry for all the questions, but I've really reached saturation.

you can line up something beforehand. If you are a qualified tradesman, an IT hotshot with a computer science degree, a medical professional or a college lecturer you stand a good chance. Technologists of all sorts are also in demand. Do bear in mind that you gotta be qualified.
Look at www.seek.co.nz for a squiz on what kind of jobs are available. Be aware that most will state that you need permission to work in New Zealand. No biggie, though. You just need a letter and some evidence from the prospective employer that no local Kiwi could be found and you have the skills needed and et voila, a work permit in your passport. Then a couple months after that and apply for residency and then you could be a Kiwi resident. Sweet as, bro (as is often said here).
There's a fair bit of paperwork, but it's quite manageable.

I was just poking around on the guvmint website and it looks like I'm on the "long term needs" list.  But it looks like I'd have to do the temp worker bit first, then apply for residency like you say.  Probably couldn't make the immigrant list.

Great tips.  Good on ya, bro.
