(A few comments up you'll see that I called his office to verify the "rumor on the web that Waxman didn't know of inherent contempt as late as Tuesday")

What the staffer said he said would be very easy to misreport as "not aware of inherent contempt."  I'm not going to post exactly what the staffer said because I didn't write it down, but let's just say that it was almost as troubling as him not knowing it existed in the first place.

It took me three minutes to call his office and get an answer.  You probably should have done that before posting what you posted.

What the staffer said he said would actually have been a significantly more interesting (and believable) article.  Perhaps you can contact his office and do a followup...

    •  Perhaps. (0+ / 0-)

Or perhaps he can do his own follow up. We're open source here.

      •  Ok, but... (0+ / 0-)

When I spoke to the lady she looked up your post and the Downing Street article while I was on the phone.  I suggested that she jump on it and respond.  It would be nice if they post some sort of reply.

On the other hand, it's a little disturbing that a rather unbelievable and easily verifiable assertion could make it to the front page of DailyKos without any effort to look into it.  Yes, you can say, "I just asked a question and posted a link to what someone else said," but that's irresponsible on one level, and a total BS reply on another.  Not only that, but you missed a good opportunity to really dig into a more shocking and believable story.  All for the cost of a simple phone call.

And judging by the number of "me too" comments, I think it's clear that some of the readers on our side need to be a little more skeptical and recalibrate their BS meters.  We accuse the other side of drinking the coolaide and not challenging obviously false things on a daily basis...

        •  If you were talking to a reporter... (0+ / 0-)

you'd have a point. But you're not. I do my work, and Waxman does his. If he doesn't want to do his own lifting, that's on him, not me.

Frankly, at this point, if you're meeting with Marcy Winograd and you say something like that and don't think it'll be discussed online, you're not paying attention.

          •  Now I’m calling shenanigans on you (0+ / 0-)

Look, I know you’re not a professional reporter, but the fact is that bloggers are trying to make the case that they’re just as important which brings some responsibility.  Anyone can grab any crazy quote from any part of the net and say, "it’s not me, it’s what they said" but that’s not terribly responsible.  And for someone who regularly has articles on the front page of a site mentioned in the traditional media and pulling in over 500,000 hits per day to grab an obviously incorrect and inflammatory statement and just sling it out there instead of making a three minute phone call is ridiculous.  (And, I might say, a little lazy.)

And shame on you for just throwing your hands up now saying it’s not your job.  I know several people who just sling crap around and they’re all on FOX.  Are you saying you’re as responsible as they are, because I’m not sure that’s such a great defense.

I had a lot of respect for you, but I see now that I might have to reevaluate that.  How is it that you can spend your time digging through congressional documents, but you can't spend two seconds to research a questionable statement?  I know the main point of your article is to "educate your representatives" but you sure chose an poor way to get your point across.  There's nothing like throwing someone under a bus to make the point about looking both ways, huh?

Frankly, at this point, if you're meeting with Marcy Winograd and you say something like that and don't think it'll be discussed online, you're not paying attention.

Nice.  You don't even know what he said because you didn't bother to follow up.  Just sling it out there...
