  •  Cheney became senile and demented in 2001? (6+ / 0-)

The first Gulf War was a strategic and financial success, in that the US talked other countries into paying the bulk of the costs, loss of life was low (200?) because they followed Colin Powell's advice to have maximum strength, instead of trying to do it with a minimal force.

All of that said, that war was a needless disaster.  Few now seem to recall that Saddam Hussein called in then US Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie and essentially explained he planned to invade Kuwait.  If the US had told him they were going to clean his clock if he did so, the odds of him invading Kuwait would have been nil.  It was a diplomatic failure on our government's part that lead Hussein to believe that we would not be too upset if that happened.

Take a look at who the cable is addressed to.  Gates and Scowcroft are among the top three names.  It could be argued that the crappy diplomacy of Bush 41 lead inexorably to the trillion (or will it be two trillion?) disasterous sinkhole that Iraq has become. Iraq I and Iraq II should be seen as "the Bush's wars".  Diplomatic failures followed by feckless military adventures.

    •  You are right - Saddam was allowed to invade Kuwa (2+ / 0-)

The April Glaspie thing is correct.

My house painter first put me onto it and I checked it out at length.

Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.
