with a pie chart that showed more than half the budget went to pay for current and past military expenditures? (Including things like pensions and financing the debt on military excursions?)

And haven't we learned from business?  It's not 'downsizing' or 'layoffs', it's 'right-sizing'.  You're just getting rid of the 'dead wood' and the pork, and making the staff fit the job to be done.

Seriously though, I think we still way overfund the military because we seem to have a need to be maintaining troops in a lot of places where there should instead be UN troops.  We should be a responsible world citizen, not the MP for the entire world.  Let the rest of the world help pick up more of the peacekeeping expenses around the world.

    •  I agree with you; however, I also can (0+ / 0-)

see some situations in which just having our presence in a country adds to the economy and brings some stability.  I also think it is good for our military to have an opportunity to simply live in other countries to learn about the rest of the world.  I think it is too often that Americans see others as less "human" than we.  I think what I am trying (not too well) to say is that sometimes there are other reasons for a military than to make war.

      •  I'll buy those arguments (0+ / 0-)

Although maybe we could rebuild the Peace Corps to larger numbers with that money instead, or seriously boost the number of exchange students we send to other countries.  Poor money into foreign language programs here in the US.  Let them see we're human, let us see the same.

My point was not to close all the military bases we have around the world, but to consider replacing a large chunk of our troops with UN troops, but I'll grant your ideas are every bit as good as mine, if not better, since I post off the top of my head here.

have a cooperative way of keeping the peace and of allowing young people to serve and learn about the world without waging war.
