If you notice, they condescended to 'defend themselves' against HER criticism, a service they do not provide to any of the other Democratic candidates. This was deployed as a defensive maneuver against Clinton's 'serious' criticism, not as an effort to discredit her. This is just the beginning of the 'Shrillary' smear campaign that the Republicans have been preparing for the last four years. Yes, I'm well aware that the Republicans like to attack Obama (with Clinton's talking points, mind you), but those passing shots don't serve to legitimize (and thus, benefit) his campaign. 'Unserious, naive' Obama and 'sissy boy' Edwards are treated as objects of ridicule in the current Republican discourse, and their [currently successful] campaign has been focused on pushing those frames into the media. The frame of 'serious candidate Clinton', in striking contrast, is being used as a fund-raising mascot.

    •  Fair enough, but if HRC wasn't the frontrunner... (1+ / 0-)

...I don't think the White House would really care what she did.  If she and Edwards swapped places in the polls, you'd see the White House going after Edwards.
